Anime has a dark side, with series such as Fist of the North Star, Hellsing, and Berserk bringing stories of blood and gore to fans through the mediums of manga and anime. Now it looks like Netflix is about to dive into a dark and magical world, as the streaming service has announced that it has teamed up with Liden Films to create a new anime series for Bastard. Following an aptly named protagonist Dark Schneider, the series is one of the best examples of brutal manga released in the 1980s.
Created in 1988 by mangaka Kazushi Hagiwara, Bastard!! ran through the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump and continued until its end in 2010, collecting twenty-seven volumes from the series. While this upcoming animated series will be the last time we’ll see Dark Schneider’s adventure come to life, it’s far from the first time we’ve seen the series receive an animated adaptation. Released in 1992, Studio AIC created six original episodes that tell the story of Bastard!! which features a setting of magic, sorcery and bloodthirsty beasts.
The official Netflix Anime Twitter account has shared the first look at the adaptation of the dark anime property, confirming that Bastard!! will arrive in 2022 and give us a new take on Dark Schneider’s bloody journey as he navigates a world of gore and sorcery:

The upcoming series is currently being produced by Liden Films, who anime fans may know for their recent work on series such as Tokyo Revengers and Cells at work! Code Black to name a few. Liden was also responsible for another dark anime adaptation, having helped create the 2016 Berserk TV shows.
The voice cast for the series slated to land on Netflix later this year currently includes Kisho Taniyama as Dark Schneider, Tomoro Kusunoki as Tia Noto Yoko, Hiroki Yasumoto as Gara, and Yoko Hikasa as Asses Nei. Bastard!! will join quite a few original anime series that have come to Netflix in the past, with the likes of Beastars, Baki Hanmaand more to round out the streaming service’s library.
