While “Cyberpunk 2077” gamers are still waiting for the game’s first expansion, they might want to check out the upcoming RPG-based anime series. Netflix, the company that will exclusively stream the anime, recently released a trailer for “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” to also announce its premiere.
The new trailer is rightly labeled as NSFW content, but it shows how much “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” shares the same vibe as the video game, which features gory and steamy cutscenes. At the end of the new trailer, Netflix announced that the anime series will be released on Tuesday, September 13.
‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ features a spin-off version of ‘Cyberpunk 2077’, so video game fans should expect to see some new characters. When the series was announcement in 2020, prior to the game’s release, CD Projekt Red said the 10-episode series would feature a “standalone” story. Although the series revolves around new faces and a new plot, it’s still set in Night City, so the show should still feel familiar to people who’ve played the RPG.
“Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” is created by Japanese animation studio Studio Trigger and directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi. They are famous for their original works “Kill la Kill” and “Promare”, both of which achieved critical and commercial success. So, if anime fans are unfamiliar with “Cyberpunk 2077”, the studio’s work may be reason enough to give the upcoming series a try. CD Projekt Red is also involved in the series as a producer.
When the series was first announced, Netflix and CD Projekt Red shared the official blurb for the show which says it will tell “the story of a street kid trying to survive in a city of the future obsessed with technology and body modifications”. The main protagonist decides to be an edgerunner in order to survive, which the blurb describes as “a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk.”
As for the video game, CD Projekt Red has announced that it is already working on the “Cyberpunk 2077” expansion which will introduce a new storyline for the game. The expansion is expected to be released in 2023.
