Publisher Bandai Namco is working on a slew of titles based on blockbuster anime and manga franchises, and we’ve gotten a glimpse of some of them
Bandai Namco is a publishing powerhouse of cartoon-based games, turning fan-favorite TV shows and manga into digital adventures.
This year sees a slew of upcoming games from the company, and they recently hosted a preview event featuring a selection of titles on their 2020 release slate. We went to see what lies ahead.
The first is Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions. FIFA and PES could have a new challenger in the soccer simulation genre, as manga masterpiece Captain Tsubasa makes a triumphant return to the game.
Beginning in 1981, Captain Tsubasa is Oozora Tsubasa’s long-standing story as he strives not only to be the best footballer in the world, but also to claim a World Cup victory with Japan.
Captain Tsubasa (also known as Oliver Atom after the original anime was adapted for Western audiences) is a global phenomenon, with professional footballers citing him as part of their inspiration.
The Captain Tsubasa series has a long history with video games, bringing play to almost any platform and even mobile. However, the majority of them were not available outside of Japan.
It will also be the first console game in 10 years.
Bandai Namco has teamed up with seasoned developer Tamsoft, known for working on dating sim Dream Club and Nintendo Wii’s crazy Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers.
Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions has been described as an arcade soccer action game where players will be allowed to perform awesome games in real time. Using their Spirit Gauge, players will be able to perform powerful dribbling, tackling and signature shots from the animated series. The game emphasizes the different abilities of each character.
Players will even be able to block shots with their whole body. But, since this is a team sport, Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions will have a shared team gauge called the V Zone.
Once activated, your team will gain a boost which can be the deciding factor in the game. The game uses cartoon shading and realistic effects to maintain an anime aesthetic.
Based on the very first Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions demo seems like a fun yet intense soccer game, much like Mario Strikers Charged. It will be great to see what new features Bandai Namco and Tamsoft have waiting on the road.
One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4
Bandai Namco has once again partnered with legendary developers Omega Force to deliver the fourth installment of the One Piece Warriors series.
Often regarded as one of the most successful manga in recent history, with over 95 volumes, over 900 episodes, and fourteen films and with no indication of stopping, One Piece has received critical acclaim.
Beginning in 1997, the One Piece story follows the adventures of the pirate Monkey D. Luffy, a boy whose body acquired the properties of rubber after eating devil fruit.
He explores the Grand Line oceans with his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, in search of the ultimate One Piece treasure left behind by Pirate King Gol D. Roger.
Fans have had their fair share of One Piece games over the years, mostly in the form of fighters and RPGs. But One Piece Warriors merges the two genres into one.
Those familiar with Omega Force’s Dynasty Warriors games will know what to expect, as this game follows similar principles.
One Piece Warriors 4 will make you fight against thousands of enemies.
Players will be able to choose from the already huge roster of heroes and villains. The game will feature characters from the newer Whole Cake Island and Wano Arcs.
Each character has their own unique set of skills, abilities, and fighting styles, allowing players to design different methods of dealing with enemies.
This episode makes some changes to the format. In previous titles, the jump was only technically possible for characters who could take off from the ground.
Now, jumping is set to become a standard mechanic, offering players additional movement sets such as aerial dashes and combos.
Another addition to the series is the game’s new stamina system.
Certain actions and moves will deplete your character’s stamina, while avoiding demanding moves allows stamina to replenish. This means that players will need to seriously think about their combat strategies.
Based on the build we’ve seen, One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 should be a refreshing entry into the series.
With the new characters, story arcs and gameplay elements, fans of the series will have to rework their old strategies and prepare for a new experience.

This will allow players to create different strategies on how they take down the variety of enemies in the game.
Players will be able to order other team members to perform special skills called Arts, accompanied by lavish animations.
Each character has their own set of in-depth skills.
